Tottenham 2-1 Arsenal: Spurs claim come from behind win in North London derby

Toby Alderweireld scored a late header as Tottenham defeated the Gunners 2-1 to bolster their chances of qualifying for Europe next season at the expense of their neighbours.

Arsenal were the dominant team for more of the match and they scored the first goal, but after Tottenham equalised they held firm against their London rivals, before the Belgian international defender, Alderweireld glanced home a header to move his team above Arsenal in the table.

Although the game lacked the usual derby frantic atmosphere, there were a few talking points as Alexandre Lacazette and Son Heung-Min's goals both consequences of defensive errors.

The match changed after the break as Spurs sat back and soaked up all the Arsenal pressure, but after seeing Aubameyang hit the crossbar, the hosts clinched victory nine minutes from time, keeping them in the battle for an European spot.

The match sprung into life with Lacazette's goal, he blasted into the top left corner after Granite Xhaka had won back possession from Serge Aurier.

Arsenal's lead lasted just 137 seconds as Sead Kolasinac's underhit pass found Son who cleverly tipped the ball over an approaching Emiliano Martinez.

The shot stopper was again called into action as he tipped Ben Davies' pile driver onto the crossbar, before an Aubameyang free kick went agonisingly wide at the other end.

Although the tempo of the match dropped after the break,Arsenal went close to regaining the lead as Aubameyang's fierce left footed strike came off the bar.

But towards the closing stages of the game, Martinez was forced to pounce at the feet of Son after good work from Harry Kane, but he was helpless to prevent Alderweireld's header from Son's corner, from finding the back of the net.
